Loop House
This project was born in a Croatian forest where I met Paul, an Austrian guy crazy enough to finance a project a stranger (me) just sketched to him on a paper napkin after a marvelous octopus salad.
I was in my autistic period traveling by bike and hiding in many European forests; I had this idea starting to grow in my mind: I wanted to go living underground. Better if in Sicily.
It is no coincidence that the Loop House concept was born after this period and two years where I did meditation every day looping a mantra in my mind. The house layout is a simple continuous space that loops around a courtyard expanding and compressing itself, depending on the sun exposition and on the exterior canopy that become larger in the south side and smaller on the north one.
The plan is composed of many circles out of center so to create progressively larger and smaller spaces. From the interior “corridor home” containing an open space with the bed and the sofa beds for guests, to the internal air-gap space, designed to insulate the house from the ground humidity and hosting in the larger area the toilet and the laundry room, and in the smaller ones the closets, the storage rooms, the technical spaces and the kitchen.
The actual interior home space is just a corridor large from 1 to 2.6 meters maximum, dived by glass doors from the courtyard. The idea is that Sicilian climate is so good that the doors will be always open making no difference from interior and exterior, living the courtyard like the home living room.
