A Wharf for Gardens
Urban Multi-Courtyard Park in Hongqiao, Shanghai.
Guanglian Headquarters Campus Green Axis Design.

This is a project for a long central park in a new development for commercial, offices and residences in Hongqiao district in Shanghai. The southern side of the park is open to the main road entrance from the highway, so is surely the most important view axis to advertise the new area but also the main entrance for the noise from the busy street.
Our design land in the area as a slim sculpture in urban scale floating along the main axis like a ship.
The two sides of the “ship” create two strong landmarks that emphasize in one side the entrance of the park thanks to a tall gate completely perforated and open to the park to let the view and the people enter on the green “ship”, and on the other side a leaning gate/wall overlooking on the small river tangent to the site.
The main body of the long landscape sculpture interact with the urban space like a dock where people can seat on or walk around or climb and enter in the hundreds gardens extracted inside the long elevated platform. This floating slab is only forty-five centimeters high but is enough to circumscribe many comfortable human sized spaces along the alleys and the small plazas and gardens scissored from this gigantic floating wharf.
Each garden have a different size and a different “topics”; like a botanic garden each green square gathers different plant species or different functions so that the final result is extremely varied.
You will find near the residential areas, courtyards reserved for basketball and badminton courts or for Tai Chi and street dance gatherings. In other areas there will be small plazas reserved for old people activities like cards or mahjong. Some of the courtyards is filled with water so to create other features and activities like fishing or RC boat areas or beautiful green ponds with aquatic plants and flowers.
Green squares will be also reserved for kids playgrounds and there will be also a skate board area on the leaning slab on the norths end where also stairs will bring the visitors to a small balcony on top of the river.
Over the concrete slab there is another layer of elements composed of metal planters volumes with wooden benches and steel parapets. All those elements will create visual screens helping to increase even more the sense of enclosure and privacy for the people enjoying the inner parts of the park, especially for the people seating on the slab or on the beaches those elements will protect the view from the big flow of people circulating in front of the commercial buildings. All those planters will increase the green ratio and bring stripes of green also in the diagonal and vertical surfaces of the two ends of the site.
The complexity of the design pattern, made by many different layers, shapes and elements, will surely enrich the urban space quality of the area creating many opportunities for people to gather and enjoy many small plazas connected by narrow alleys surrounded by green screens and seating docks; experiences you find more and more rarely in a big metropolis like Shanghai.
Clearly the main goal of our design is not only to create a decorative and iconic green landscape but also to realize an inviting place where people can truly find the same quiet peace and privacy that will be found in a private garden.
