Morphologic Flow
ZhaoJiaBang Rd Station Triangular Landscape in Shanghai

This project site is a vast empty area adjacent to the very large DongAn Street and despite its triangular shape have a natural vocation for directionality and flows; flows of any kind, flows of people, flows of bikes, flows of cars, and thanks to our design also flows of landscape morphologies, flows of greenery and flows of urban furnitures. The aim of our design is to respect the functionality and the feeling people have passing through this area. Most of people will pass adjacent this site though their cars at relatively high speed, many will pass though the reserved lane with their bicycles and motorcycles at medium speed and finally the people passing though the pedestrian street at lower speed but all of them will have the same direction and the same perception of the space; and like a river that flows fast and gets larger in some areas where the water is slower also our site enlarge the narrow pedestrian area to give space to the subway exit and to an area where the people can get slower or even rest.
The morphology of our dynamic concrete nubbles furnitures is respecting this feeling of flows speed: near to the street where the speed and density of people flows is higher the nubbles are smaller and more distant from each other to give space to the visitors to pass by; gradually getting far from the high speed flows the nubbles are getting bigger and more near to each other so to create more intimate spaces for people who are slowly exploring the park or the ones who want to sit and rest. In this way the biggest nubbles will be the ones nearest to the back wall being able to cover its view and to become sculptural landmarks visible also from the people passing by car far away.
The design of the nubbles is always changing its scale but repeating the same aerodynamic shape to facilitate the passing of the flows in a physical way but mostly on a psychological way.
The design of each concrete nubbles is different from the each other and is shape is studied to accommodate the green areas, trees, benches, bicycles locks and even alcoves with tables to facilitate people gatherings for playing cards, drinking tea or using laptops.
Also the lighting system is flowing with the rest of the landscape, creating LED flow lines on the floor and higher light poles to give light from the top to the people sitting on the benches and to the main walking channels.
