Red Star Shopping Mall

EN CH

Introduction to the Plaza de Shenyang Redstar Macalline Furniture & Decoration Project.

My intention in the Plaza de Shenyang Redstar Furniture & Decoration Project has been to design an important and significant landmark for Shenyang city – a building immediately recognizable by the people passing through.
In order to do this I have treated the building as a contemporary urban sculpture.
A sculpture made up of volumes, surfaces, lines, and most important of all, immaterial elements such as light, shadows and wind.

My intention has been to hide the complexity of the project in a very simple architectural shape, so that people will understand it and, as with an advertising slogan, remember it easily.

The project is divided into three simple elements, very different from each other so as to create a striking contrast between them, thus giving significant aesthetic value to the design:

- The monolith volume of the shopping mall
- The drilled surface covering most of the site, changing its function - starting as a floor, becoming a wall and developing into a roof
- The glass volume of the towers and the commercial space below

The monolith is a prismatic volume of six stories, simple and strong.
This monolith is floating on the air as a surrealistic element, made of a surrealistic material, a material that interacts with the surrounding nature, changing its behavior with the mutating weather conditions.
The façade is composed of a matrix of smooth rectangular elements made of steel or shiny laminate depending on the budget.
These elements are attached to the real wall with an elastic rubber material, so that they can flicker and move with the wind, creating a glittery shining effect with the reflection of the surroundings, the sunlight or the artificial night light.
The movement of the wind will also give to the façade a waving effect that reminds one of the wind swaying grass in a field or leaves of trees. This effect will have an attraction for people and make the building popular and well known as the city’s mutating architecture.
These artificial “leaves” are distant 10 centimeters from the real wall creating a natural ventilation façade system to insulate the building from the heat in summer and from the rain and the wind in winter. The inclination of the “leaves” will allow the rain water to only go behind them, so that the front façade will always be clear of water and possible color change.
To let the natural light come through the shopping mall there will be four holes on the top of the monolith that create interior courtyards where people can see plants, lakes and a view of the sky.
The roof of the monolith will be used for the air conditioning machines covered by a steel net.

The drilled surface will be made of light concrete or a simple light natural stone to give uniformity to this strip that is 80 centimeters high.
The surface will unfold in one direction only and will encompass the whole site, from the pedestrian entrance, to the parking, to the outdoor plaza, to the towers, walls and roofs, giving uniformity to the architectural language of the project.
The holes on the surface will have different functions: they can be used for hypogeal benches, water lakes, potted plants or trees, corridor windows, or skylight roof windows.

The glass volume contains all the second shopping mall and all the residential towers. The sheets of transparent glass will be only an exterior covering material; attached immediately behind there will be a white layer and a “traditional” wall system. The effect will therefore be very plain and shiny but the insulation will be ensured by the walls.
With this system the glass is not a window and can be very thin so the cost is reduced.
On the six stories of the commercial area, the white sheet behind the glass can be used for commercial advertisements.
This commercial basement will have within it three square courtyards with greenery inside that gives light to the central part of the shopping area.
In the top part of the glass volume there are the residential towers composed of apartments of 50, 60 and 70 square meters. Most of them are orientated facing southeast, with a small percentage facing northwest.
