Tree House for a child
A house on a tree at Monte d’Oro, Rome

This project has a rather unusual and special client … a nine year old child who is so attached to his tree that he wants to live on top of it.

The tree has an unusual and fortunate shape as it is formed by two main branches, each forked into two, and each precisely on the same axis, but at a different level.

The project intends to use these two natural "forks" as a base or seat for two wooden beams in laminar wood which would jut out for three metres and which would form a triangular structure in the tree and provide stability.

It is on these beams that the secondary structure would mingle into the tree and its shape would be like a funnel imbedded onto the branches.

The result would be a bizarre object which seems to defy the law of statics as its bulkiest part is exactly at the end of the overhanging structure.

Access would be by a rope ladder (positioned at the "funnel" entrance and where the rain water would drain); here there should be a cemented base to which the ladder is attached so as to counterbalance the obvious overhanging from the far end.

The result would be a structure that leans into the natural form of the branches and the flooring would be a series of boards following the natural incline, like a big flight of stairs.
Actually each step or plank would have a different function according to the width or position, to be transformed into a bed, a bench, a chair, a table, or if outside the hut, a theater or a terrace. The skin, made of planks and wooden panels, would be structured to make space for a terraced entrance, a central window and a skylight to be able to look up and see foliage above and at nigh time the stars in the sky.

Tree House for a child

A house on a tree at Monte d’Oro, Rome
